Chavenage Sleight Round Barrows Round Barrows in Gloucestershire

Standing about 600m North of part of the Roman Road Akeman Street between Avening and Chavenage (with its well-known haunted Elizabethan house) is a pair of Iron Age Round Barrows that have suffered badly over the years from agricultural operations. The more southerly can still be made out (just) but the more northerly features only as a faint crop mark. The barrows were at one time surrounded by an Anglo-Saxon Graveyard.

The noticeable barrow is best picked out from the east but as you get nearer you cannot but appreciate the greater concentration of stones. A few more decades and the site will have been ploughed away. The site is a little more famous as an Anglo-Saxon Burial site well described in The Gazetteer of Anglo-Saxon Burial Sites by Audrey Meaney 1964 p90 - and it is also mentioned by pastscape: Gloucestershire: Cotswold: Avening: 208916
