Peathill
Peathill submitted by SolarMegalith : Single menhir or remain of a stone circle ? In the current condition of the site it's difficult to estimate it. To reach the stone you can drive to Peathill farm, but to get close to the menhir you need to cross a field - unfortunately the owner of the land didn't leave any footpath to the monument. Peathill submitted by cosmic : Peathill Stone Unfortunately winter wheat had already been sown so this was as close as I could get. According to RCAHMS it is the remanant of a circle rather than just a stone :- This grey, granite stone, 6 feet 7 inches (1.75m) high and over 10 feet (3.05m) in girth, is the remnant of a stone circle (New Statistical Account [NSA] 1845) perhaps 45 to 50 feet in diameter. An urn was found... (Vote or comment on this photo)

The stone is about nine foot tall. It is near the top of a hill and can be clearly seen for miles around through about 330 degrees. I suspect that the stone was placed for orientation purposes - its distinct shape provides precise information. The surrounding land is rich in neolithic finds. Simple tools mainly from native materials - sandstone and granite - though the local museum has fine flint pieces. A cist (contents now in Edinburgh) was found near the stone; though it is probably later.
