I've visited Conkwell several times. I have doubts about the likelihood of this having ever been a stone circle, to be honest, but the woods are lovely and the area has been continuously occupied for thousands of years.

Several largish stones lie heavily overgrown by the edge of the woods, with one on the other side of a bisecting road. Heaps of smaller stones lie everywhere, the remains of walls or quarrying, perhaps?

Nearby is Jugs Grave, a Bronze Age cairn which is worth a visit, and the woods are crisscrossed by a network of fallen walls, which I'm told are the remains of ancient field systems. Details are not easy to find. The ground throughout the area has been much disturbed by quarrying, and the local limestone lies close to the surface everywhere.

Conkwell - not a stone circle by Andy B on Tuesday, 26 December 2017

Pastscape: Exposed rock strata originally interpreted as a stone circle.
ST 79456280 A possible stone circle, in "No Man's Land", cut by the road between Conkwell and Upper Haugh Farm, was discovered by G. Underwood. The area is disturbed by quarrying and a number of stones are visible.

Some of the stones have stalagmitic deposits and must therefore have been brought there (though they might equally represent a shattered deposit, in situ).
Flint flakes and one sherd were found.

Grinsell described the circle as doubtful.

This is not a stone circle. The stones, which extend further than shown by Underwood, are parts of normal strata, probably visible because of quarrying in the area.

No mans land refers to the small patch between the two tracks off the lane. From the "T" junction, the first track leads into the woods(pheasant shoot) and the second leads into the paddock. This small patch of land is where the centre of the circle is suppose to be. From here you can locate stone on the far side of each track and over on the far side of the lane.
I lived there from the summer of 2006 to spring 2007. I was aware of the stones but it didnt occur to me at the time that it was a ancient stone circle to which my tidy caravan was in the middle of.
There is so much to explore there and the surrounding area, its worth pitching up there to really take it all in. Plus you have to settle to get a good feel for what goes on at night. I lay in terror at night for some time before i realised the unusual screaming and heavy footsteps at night were just the local muntjac doing their thing.

pastscape casts serious doubt on this site - the argument is well set out on their site: Wiltshire; Winsley; 204146 - the new age travellers have now departed

We went up to find the site today and think we discovered potentially quite a large circle that has been disrupted over the years. Its not in a circle anymore but there is evidence of standing stones still scattered about. We also found the Cairn deeper in the woods with what looks like lots of old stone bounderies around and leading up to the Cairn and also more sarcen stones almost totally buried in the ground. Very interesting and worth a more in depth visit now we know where it is.

Not a lot to see here now although Guy Underwood the Bradford-on-Avon water diviner produced a plan in the 50s showing the extent of the circle.Interestingly the area is known as No Mans Land and is still common ground. There is in fact a couple of people living there in benders and occasionally new age travellers park up for a while.
