It is claimed that these boundary stones were erected in 1859 and are believed to be the remains of a chambered tomb. In early 19th century guide books they are referred to as "Druidical stones" which of course they are not. A modern folly, but perhaps Tolkien had them in mind when he Created the Three Farthings Stone in the Shire of MiddleEarth.

I've been to the stones several times with my collie dog when visiting rocks east woodland nearby. I've sat inside them & often imagine them closing in on me. Andy.

Your info seems to suggest they were erected 1859, but reference to them is made on John Speeds' map of Gloucestershire from 1610.

Perhaps this is something like the Irish Stone of Divisions (Catstone) which stands at the point where four provinces meet and is the entrance to the fifth mystical realm.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has sat on the mini-dolmen inside this structure, if only I lived nearer - I'd be there like a shot.
