Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Wiltshire

The well has long since been capped. But the site is now marked by a drinking trough used as a planter. An inscription tells us that the present structure was "erected by Algernon 14th Duke of Somerset, Anno Domini 1891". A verse reads:

Drink travellers drink of Bradley's purest rill,
Which strange to say runs quite a mile up hill.
Then to your panting steeds let all attend,
An honest horse is surely Man's best friend.

Interested in the map showing other wells, might there be one in my garden? In Colin Dowson's old house.

I read with interest info on the Town Well as my family have lived in Maiden Bradley since the 1600s. The information on the Well is incorrect. Town Well is in the garden of 55 The Rank, M.Bradley. It is a large well that is still open today. There was an entrance to the well to allow any villagers access for water but was closed during World War II. The Well was in use until 1900 when Maiden Bradley had its own water supply installed. This information was obtained from my father who is 93 and his grandfather who died in 1936 aged 97. I also have a map of Maiden Bradley from 1887 where all Wells are marked and there is not one marked on the site of the Fountain. I hope that the information on the website can now be updated.

    Sylvia,

Very much interested in seeing the 1887 map of wells in Maiden Bradley, hoping there is an old well in my garden, a friend saw one online but now cannot find it again.

I've updated the position to 55 The Rank, thanks.

@anon - here's a good old OS map that shows the wells.
