South Fornet submitted by golux : The western flanker has on its south face the inscription "A BRUCE" in elegant serif capitals. as neatly executed as on a headstone. I could find no mention of this mysterious addition in the RCAHMS records. No doubt RCAHMS would consider this a defacement of an historic monument but this is not thoughtless vandalism, - somebody went to some trouble to execute this. Anybody know why?

Hi,
I may have an answer to the puzzling BRUCE inscription on one of the stones of the megalithic site of South Fornet. One member of my family, John Bruce (1916-1905) was on lease for nineteen years on Fornet farm in Skene (see document below). As is attested by family documents, his children used to play in the wood near the farmhouse, where the stones are. It is then very likely that they wrote the family name on one of them.
["The friends of John Bruce will be gratified to learn that that, on the expiry of his lease of Lightnot, Mmeldrum, at Martinmas next, he will enter on the fine farm of South Fornet, Skene, belonging to the Earl of Fife. The district may, in this instance, be congratulated on having the “right man in the right place.” (announcement published in the Aberdeen Journal, 25 August 1869)]

Best regards,
Frederic Gannon

This recumbent is now reduced to the two flankers the East of which seems to have a cup mark. I reached it with a walk up through the copse and then into the grassy field.
