Standing Stone in Dorset

There are a number of features of interest at this spot; most obviously there is the standing stone on the boundary wall of the graveyard. Careful observation shows the wall was actually built around the stone.

The stone's prehistoric antiquity appears not to be documented, though five Lower Palaeolithic handaxes were found in the area, and substantial Iron Age and Romano-British burials and settlements were nearby. One Iron Age burial, the so-called"Whitcombe Warrior" is of a male with a long slashing sword at his side.

Also outside the wall are many earthworks of a Deserted Mediaeval Village, and what we called a 'snail tree' - outside the western wall, near the road, was a tree with hundreds upon hundreds of snails crammed 8 to 10 feet high on the tree trunk beneath the boughs. Many snail shells are on the ground beneath the tree. A most curious phenomenon.

Inside the wall is a 14th Century Cross, and an unusual tomb nearby with a face engraved upon it; beneath are a crossed pick and spade.

Within the church are four fragments of Saxon cross stones - two immediately when entering the building, the other two near the font.

The building has a very simple, peaceful ambience indeed.

Parking is across the road in an obvious layby. Take the utmost care crossing the road.

Whitcombe 1
Whitcombe 1 submitted by JimChampion : April 2005. Not easy to photograph as the long barrow is overgrown in the corner of Came Wood. This is a view of the NE end of the barrow, with its overlying bowl barrow, taken from atop the roots of a fallen tree. (1 comment)

Whitcombe submitted by TimPrevett : Two more Saxon Cross fragments in the corner near the font (left in the pic for sense of location); there are patterns on these, but very hard to make out indeed. (1 comment)

Whitcombe
Whitcombe submitted by TimPrevett : The standing stone is just on the corner of the church boundary wall nearest the road here; substantial earthworks of a deserted mediaeval village can be seen around the right hand side of the church, and to the rear.
