I have visited· I would like to visit

LS-Dave visited on 16th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 4 Been meaning to visit this site for over 30 years. Did not disappoint. Walked up from Clapham, although can be reached via shorter walk from nearby lane. Expansive field of erratics of varying sizes, many with interesting forms. One in particular has two prominent 'eye sockets'. A friend who, like myself, has some knowledge of geology suggested they are a product of solution weathering. If so they are the only rocks I could find with such features. From the site there are also good views of the nearby cairn field to the north, and the worked landscape to the south east including ridge and furrows, lynchet terracing and the Iron Age Romano settlement at SD 7770 6845.

Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in Yorkshire (North)

These large Silurian sandstone and slate erratic boulders, found high above the moors to the north of Austwick, are featured on the Journal of Antiquities - see their entry for Norber Erratics, Austwick, North Yorkshire. The Journal entry includes a photograph of one of the erratics which is propped up on little limestone pedestals or stilts, plus a description of their formation.

Details of a walk around these "Geologists' Dreams" can be found at Yorkshire Magazine, Norber Erratics Walk.
