Hillfort in North Yorshire. This hillfort sits atop the imposing hill of Ingleborough at an altitude of 2,350 feet above sea level. It is thought to have been built around the first century AD by the Brigantes.
This northern Celtic tribe was under attack from the invading armies of Rome, and the 15 acre plateau was chosen to become the site of a huge defensive position. It is unique in Yorkshire in that it wasn't constructed purely for military use, but as an extensive fortified village.
A rampart of millstone grit 3000 feet long encircled the massive flat summit. This was puntuated by entrances on the northern, eastern and south-western sides. Within this wall are the remains of circular stone hut foundations, usually showing south-facing entrances.
Unfortunately, the remains are in a sorry state. Please DON'T take the stones from these irreplaceable ancient constructions to use in the many useless and uninteresting cairns that litter the summit.
Details of the archaeology of the area at the Ingleborough Archaeology Group.
Note: 'Rock on Top' rock band denied permission to play on two summits but are still planning to play gig on this delicate hillfort this Saturday.

Ingleborough Camp submitted by Rich32 There are 2 sizes of hut circles at the top of Ingleborough, the largest have an 8meter diameter & the smallest 5.5m. As per usual the entrances appear to be on the southern side.

The hillfort is said to be the highest in England, at about 2350 ft. Its commanding view over the surrounding area is something to behold, as is the incessant wind.

Re: The Archaeology of Ingleborough Summit, Sat 24–Sun 25 July (Score: 1) by peerjay on Sunday, 15 July 2012 (User Info | Send a Message) | Despite local objections, a mountain rescue team (NOT local to the area) intend holding a rock band concert on Ingleborough summit (and Pen y Ghent and Whernside) over the weekend of 20th - 22nd July 2012. The local mountain rescue team, the Cave Rescue Organisation (despite the name - mountain rescue too) and local environmental groups have described the event as inappropriate for an environmentally sensitive area, particularly within a national park. There is already a lot of concern about the damage being done to the archaeology on this summit and to the environment on the other two of the Yorkshire 'Three Peaks' due to high volumes of foot traffic generated by charity walks.
The event is described as a fundraising initiative for Mountain Rescue, but all money collected is in fact going to only one team - Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue Team.
If you are in the area that weekend, and really feel the need to donate to charity, the local MR and Cave Rescue team would be a more worthy cause to donate too. | [ Reply to This ]
Permission not given to play on two of the summits (Score: 1) by Andy B (andy@megalithic.co.uk) on Wednesday, 18 July 2012 (User Info | Send a Message) | This from their Facebook page:
Quick update on next weekends activities. We have had some issues with land access to perform on Penygent and Whernside but we are still hopeful that we can resolve these issues over this coming week [they haven't been given permission to play on either Pen y Ghent or Whernside].
We have had permission for Ingleborough which we plan to summit at 2pm on saturday 21st. Sound Driver will be performing, obviously we are some what governed by the weather and should it be raining(as if) then we will have to look at an alternative.
[Great organisation to put out all the publicity before getting permission, then not update any of their web pages about it! And don't try and visit the web site for the Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue Team as my antivirus blocked it as having a trojan installed on it - so I won't give the link then! - MegP Ed] | [ Reply to This ]
