Barmekin of Echt
Barmekin of Echt submitted by bellarby : A tough walk through the heather (with or without snow) to this hill fort? The view is worth the effort. A series of at least 5 concentric defences. Very similar to Hill of Barra near Oldmeldrum. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

I was brought up in Echt 1948-1962 where my father was the local policeman he retired in 1962 and I am very surprised to see that so little practical archaeological work has been done on this site! We used to climb up the Barmekin hill fairly frequently and it always struck me even as a child that there was something of some age and substance that existed here.
I find it puzzling why nothing at all has been done to elucidate this once important site. It sits on a very prominent hill and some of the neolithic sites close by have been well described e.g. Sunhoney standing stones which are about less than three miles away.
I will be grateful if anyone can help me better understand why this site has been ignored?
In my humble opinion there are several simple questions that could without doubt be answered with some consolidated research a) who built the site and when, b) was it inhabited or for defensive purposes only, c) when was it abandoned and finally why was it abandoned and completely ignored by academics?
I still know the local farmer whose fields are adjacent to the Barmekin and he tells me that there has been no research carried out here in his lifetime and he is now 75 years old.
I have a publication from an academic source dated 1919 but it is simply topographical descriptions and gives no clues to any of the above questions.

Anyone out there who can throw any light on why this has been so profoundly ignored? My e-mail address is Mike@charters.eu.com and I now live in Surrey.

Hope to hear from an enthusiast member.
Regards,Mike Ellis
