Class I Pictish Symbol Stone in Aberdeen and the Grampians

Logie Elphinstone, Aberdeenshire NJ72NW 7 (stone 2); Class 1; Ogham at top, transliterated as “QFTQU” reading clockwise.

The only “circular” Ogham I have seen recorded on a Pictish Stone. On first sight looks like a sunburst. Also known as “wheel” Ogham.

Logie Elphinstone submitted by golux : As well as the three sets of symbols (highlighted in the previous picture) there are other markings, including two pairs of concentric circles and two parallel lines. Thought to be the remnants of an earlier carving of a Double-Disc-plus-Z-rod. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Logie Elphinstone
Logie Elphinstone submitted by golux : One of a group of three symbol stones, this one displays: an Ogham inscription at the top, a Crescent-plus-V-rod below that, a Double-Disc-plus-Z-rod at the bottom, and more. I have highlighted only these symbols for clarity but there is more - see following picture.

The missing fourth stone, which bears an unusual set of 4 symbols, was never part of the original group and it is not lost. In 1914 it was found at Newton of Lewesk and placed with the three stones at Logie Elphinstone. Subsequently it was moved to Kinellar House where it now stands beside the driveway (see Newton of Lewesk page http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=7124).

A nice little site, 3 stones now survive of the 4 original stones. All carry VERY LITTLE weathering, partly due to their more sheltered positions, beneath the trees of the adjacent house.

Originally they were discovered on the Moor of Carden, but brought to the garden for safe keeping.

Stone 1 - 3'6" tall, A crescent and V-rod above a double-disc

Stone 2 - 4'6" tall pillar, algae covered. Circular stem line with Ogham script, above a crescent and V-rod and a double-disc and Z-rod.

Stone 3 - 3'6" tall, A pictish beast above a crexcent and V-rod.

The fourth stone was said to have been used as a hearthstone in a tenants cottage, the heat splitting and destroying the stone forever.

Worthy of a visit to see, if in the vicinity.

I would refer you to the photographs included.
