The site consists of an oval shaped mound up to 6m high with maximum dimensions of 44m NNW-SSE by 35m SSW-NNE. Limited excavation by Stoneyhurst College in 1894 failed to find any archeological remains.
This barrow is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1008909 (Bowl barrow 170m north east of Hacking Boat House) and recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 44477. Pastscape suggests that as no archaeological remains were found, this might be a glacial mound, but is "considered to be a pair with Winckley Lowe I".
The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Winckley Lowes II, Near Hurst Green, Lancashire, which includes a map of the immediate area showing both barrows, directions for finding this site, descriptions and a list of reference sources for more information. The Journal adds in a quotation from Dixon's 'Journey Through Brigantia' publication (1993) which says: "A third mound once stood across the river at Brockhall Eases. During the summer of 1836 Thomas Hubbersty, the farmer at Brockhall, was removing a large mound of earth when he discovered a stone-lined cist. This was said to contain human bones and the rusty remains of some spearheads of iron. The whole crumbled to dust on exposure to air. Given that the spearheads were made of iron, one is tempted to describe it as a 1st millennium B.C. burial".
