Culliford Tree
Culliford Tree submitted by bec-zog : Came Wood Barrows SY 699,855. Collection of Neolithic and Bronze age barrows. (Ridgeway Hill - Broadmayne A354). 26 barrows located in wood and fields to the East. Included in this group is Cullieford Tree Barrow which contained four burials, with amber bead necklace & gold artifacts. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This cemetery of Bronze Age bell-, bowl- and pond barrows extends from the wood, east across the hill top, with a glorious view to the coast, including Chalbury Hill Fort, and the impressive Bincombe Barrows. The eastern members of the group are aligned on and scattered around the neolithic Broadmayne bank barrow.

Of particular interest is the large tree-covered bowl barrow known as the Culliford Tree barrow. It is found at grid ref SY699855, between the lane to Whitcombe and the eastern edge of Came Wood. It is 36m in diameter and nearly 5m high, with a huge mutilation at its summit and southern side. The barrow's history spans the ages, containing cremations, Bronze Age pottery, medieval inhumations and was even used as a moot for the local Hundred.

This one is in the wood, which has no public access, but can easily be seen from the boundary during winter. There are many signs informing that the woods are private. The barrow is visible here to the rear centre of the picture. Photo 19/12/20, on iPhone 11.

Culliford Tree submitted by JimChampion : A view from the north of the huge Culliford Tree bowl barrow, which gives the associated barrow cemetery its name. It is clearly a victim of the 18th century fashion for planting beech trees on Bronze Age barrows (like those on Overton Down near Avebury).

The impressive Broadmayne bank barrow is on the same alignment, just the other side of the hedge. The ominous clouds signal the arrival of heavy rain.

My family name is Came. Would love to learn more about the origins of the name Came Wood in Dorset as we all live in south Devon. Soon, in a year or so, we'll be selling and moving east, and would be excited to discover some ancestors here as we haven't yet decided on where to go and Dorset is in the right direction!

regards

Maggie Mitchell

Came Wood group more properly applies to the barrows on and adjoining the Golf Course further west; these should be under "Culliford Tree Barrow" group. A gazeteer, and informed locals use the names accordingly. I'll be adding photos and sites, and tidying the entries here in the coming days. Tim.

Great help and very interesting infomation but for a novice like me who only see's the obvious at first, to discover what the terracing around many site's was called and was for, took a long internet search. Could you add a short piece about "lytchets"
