It lies very near the Roman route of Maiden Way, which in this part of the world goes over Hartleyburn Fell and Glendue Fell, and runs west of this settlement, following the route of the Pennine Way through Lambley Common.
We decided, on impulse, to stop and have a look, especially as there was a handy hard-cored parking space next to the green pumping station and were so interested, I did something I don’t usually do, and let myself into the field to walk along the track running parallel with the southern bank.
I could make out a rectangular structure in the south eastern corner, and possible hut circle mid-way across and one-third of the length south of the northern bank.
This enclosure is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 13779, which describes it as the "earthwork remains of Romano-British homestead containing hut circles ... (a) rectilinear homestead (in mainly good condition) consisting of a strong rampart and inner ditch, with entrance on the E (flanked by a depression in the SE corner) and the possible remains of huts in the western half of the interior. A break in the west bank is probably modern."
Whilst the eastern bank can be see from the fence next to the A689, we cheekily let ourselves into the field for a very quick walk up the grassy track running alongside the southern bank.
A modern draining ditch runs parallel with the northern bank. There is a gap in the middle of the southern bank, but this appears to be to let a quad bike into the structure. There are numerous lumps and bumps in the enclosure; the main ones I saw were a possible hut circle towards the northern bank, half way across the width of the enclosure, and a rectangular, stone-lined shape at its south eastern corner. This settlement is better preserved than many I've seen, with the wide banks clearly visible in the pasture.
