Green Hill Cairns
Green Hill Cairns submitted by David : Green Hill is a promontory of limestone that defied erosion by the glaciers. Two well preserved good-sized cairns on a brow, tied by a chunky earthfast boulder between them. There's a line of depressions in the ground, behind here, which show very well on aerial images and which were probably surface workings for copper ore, along a fault in the limestone.

These cairns, and the rock between them, owe their survival to their remote location. Full Right To Roam access.

Green Hill Cairns
Green Hill Cairns submitted by David : In the right light the stone does appear to show the head of a lizard. It must've taken a lot of careful chipping and there are still one or two Common lizard remaining on the moors. They're not helped by the over burning of the heather. Adders were extinguished in the 1960s - perhaps it was intended as a snakehead. Certainly a reptile! (Vote or comment on this photo)
