Penshiel Grange Stone Circle
Penshiel Grange Stone Circle submitted by mafenty : Standing stone within circle of lesser stones, close to Pre- Reformation chapel, recalling St Augustine's instructions to..." purify their temples..let them become the temples of the true god...so the people will have no need to change their place of concourse" (Vote or comment on this photo)
Stone Circle in East Lothian

There are two stone circles within 60 yards of each other, one being the Chapel Stone (Penshiel Grange) and this demolished stone circle, also called Penshiel Grange, which lies 60 yards south of the Chapel Stone.

For more information, see Canmore ID 57558, which says there are "four large prostrate monoliths measuring 5ft 3 ins by 3ft, 5ft 7 ins by 2ft 8 ins, respectively. The first three lie in an almost straight line 11ft 6 ins and 13ft apart, and the last lies about 10ft to the E. In their immediately vicinity is a row of large boulders gathered into a straight line, but they are of entirely different character to the four monoliths, which in shape and size so much resemble stones from a circle. It is not likely that their association is fortuitous, and the probability is that they had originally formed a stone circle."

In 1980, it was thought the four stones might have resembled a four-poster stone circle, such as those found in central Scotland, but it appears these four stones and the other 'row' nearby might have been a larger stone circle, now destroyed by field clearances.

This stone is also featured on the Ancient Stones: A Guide to Standing Stones and Stone Circles in the South of Scotland, see their entry for the Stone Circle, Penshiel, Cranshaws, which includes a description, directions for finding the stone with nearby parking, and fieldnotes.

Just to note that SID 1202 Penshiel and SID 1203 Penshiel Grange need to be sorted out to avoid confusion. br />
Canmore have two separate entries:
ID 57558 for Penshiel Grange stone circle at NGR NT 6402 6309 and
ID 57557 for The Chapel Stone (aka Penshiel Grange) stone circle at NT 6401 6317 - the image on Canmore 57557 = the photo on SID 1203 but the corresponding grid reference is on SID 1202.

Will come back and look at this once I've finished with the East/West Lothian spreadsheet for The Old Stones (and I'm less confused!), unless anyone else can make sense of this in the meantime!
