Rock Art in Lancashire

This small cup and ring marked stone, originally found in the bank of Rivington Lower Reservoir in 1999, used to stand in a rock garden in the car park of Anderton Hall Lodge on New Road, just east of Anderton village, at SD 6153 1400. It is now located in the Anderton Leisure Centre.

The Journal of Antiquities features a page for this cup and ring marked stone - see their entry for Rivington Cup-Marked Stone, Anderton, Lancashire, which includes a photograph of the stone and a drawing of its motifs.

Update February 2023: See the comments by Paul L below. He tells us he found the stone much earlier than 1999, and it was originally thought to be the fossil of a tree stump. Thanks for letting us know, Paul - much appreciated.

Re: Rivington Stone by Anonymous on Thursday, 16 February 2023
The stone was one I found much earlier than 99, it was between 94 and 96, where normally the water would have been in the reservoir in a dry season, on the Horrobin Embankment side of what is now GoApe. GoApe wasn't there back then. I handed it in to Great House Barn where it then had a display of items found in the area, including the stone face.

Very well done for finding this, and for handing it in. I'd love to be able to find a new rock art stone, especially one like this.

I've edited the site page main text so people can see your comments about when it was found, and what the original interpretation of it was. Many thanks for letting us know. Best wishes.
