Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Gloucestershire

St Arild sometimes St Arilda was a little known Saxon Saint reputedly beheaded by the tyrant Muncius around about 700AD for refusing his 'unwelcome advances'. After the dreadful deed she was buried beside the Well where in her lifetime she had resided.

According to the much travelled John Leland (16th Century) after she became the Patron Saint of Oldbury-on-Severn Church (often said to be built on the site of a Bronze Age Round Barrow) her bones were exhumed and were re-interred in Gloucester Cathedral.

Although her name is recognised to be Saxon, my researches suggest the name comes from Sweden - a Viking Christian Convert maybe?

Not mentioned in R C S Walters book on Ancient Wells in Gloucestershire (somewhat unusual for him to 'miss a Well') it is noted on the pastcscape website (South Gloucestershire - Thornbury) 201702
