Barrow House Farm Long Barrow
Barrow House Farm Long Barrow submitted by TheCaptain : The long barrow possibly has remains of a chamber at its eastern end. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Just to the west of the A39, on the top of the hill just before it descends southwards into Chewton Mendip, there are some lumps and bumps which can be seen in the field. It looks to be two or three round barrows with a fairly large long barrow in between them. The long barrow possibly has remains of a chamber at its eastern end.

However, lumps and bumps round here must be taken with a pinch of salt, as the land has been fairly well mined over the last couple of millennia, and as such, the lumps and bumps may not be all they seem.

From Somerset HER site No 23255.

Details:
Long barrow 180ft long, 60ft wide and 8ft high (Chewton Mendip I). Orientated E-W. Possible indications of chambering at E end. {1}

Seen and sketched by Skinner. {2}

Long barrow 110ft long and 10ft high with upper part of two possible orthostats visible at W end. {5}

Rather doubtful long barrow. A slight platform beyond scooping on the N side strongly suggests that this was originally a round barrow. {6}

Scheduled as AM 140d. Mound up to 3.75m high, 16m wide and 20m long E-W. There is an old quarry pit on the N side with some stone lying about. Scheduled as the E half of a long barrow together with AM 140e (PRN 23255), the central portion having been removed. {7}

Contained within cemetery (PRN 23256). {11}

Scheduling revised 11.08.1993 with new national number. {12}

The long barrow lies on top of the ridge in a field of permanent pasture. Generally in excellent condition with good grass cover, though steep NW edge has suffered slippage in last few years, with this now grassing over. {13}
