TheCaptain visited on 19th Sep 2022 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 3 I now walk south along the trackway past the rough limestone pavement before heading out southwesterly across the open land to find the Oddendale circles. Quite hard to see at first, then they come into view, the stones hiding amongst the long grass. Upon closer inspection it is a really fabulous site, a large outer ring of big boulders surrounding a smaller ring with possible remains of a cist at the centre. There are several outlying stones around the large circle, some possibly forming an avenue to the northeast. Its lovely here with huge views all around and nobody else within sight. I spent quite a bit of time up here before heading back to the car and onwards to Penrith.

Anne T visited on 7th Sep 2014 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 4 Oddendales Stone Circle, Oddendale, Cumbria: From Seal Howe, heading directly north west across the pasture to the ‘cairn circle’ was interesting walking, as the ground was lumpy and bumpy with hidden stones underneath. I was not prepared for what we found – a beautiful stone circle of some 34 stones (if I counted correctly) with an inner circle that looked like it had been a cairn or inner mound. I wish I had a wide-angled lens to capture the beauty of this stone circle in the landscape (if you can successfully ignore the scar of Hardendale Quarry in the background, which we did). Even with my husband perched on top of a nearby stone to get a higher angle, we couldn’t achieve the shot we wanted. Nearby are also other large red granite stones that we thought might have formed an avenue (but we are quite imaginative people, and would love to have the skills to interpret the prehistoric landscape). Walking back to the car by the hamlet of Oddendale (according to the Visit Cumbria website, not simply just a farm), the limestone pavement is impressive. Driving onto Gamelands Stone Circle, it hit me how large the prehistoric landscape is around Shap, and how important an area it must have been in the past.

An excellent double ringed Bronze Age concentric stone circle Cumbria, a must see. The monument includes an outer circle of 26.3m (86 ft) in diameter of 34 pink granite boulders and an inner circle of 7.5m (24.5 ft) in diameter of 23 smaller boulders of the same material. The inner circle forms the kerb of a small cairn up to 0.3m (12 inches) high from which earthfast stones protrude. Immediately north of the outer circle is a small group of associated outlying stones.

Limited antiquarian investigation of the central cairn located evidence of burning; scheduled."

Oddendale stone alignment
Oddendale stone alignment submitted by MonumentMan : The southern pair of boulders at NY5926213023 are larger than the northern pair and spaced further apart. A short walk uphill to the southwest of these two boulders lies the Sundial Stone (NY5920712964) and then the entrance to Oddendale stone circle. Perhaps these paired boulders acted as a visual guide over the landscape to this circle.

A central cairn with kerb, and outer circle. At 120 degs there is a stone between the central cairn and the outer circle (see livingRocks photo and comment). Immediately to the north is another stone and three to its east side. All the stones appear to be pink granite erratics, except a low western outer stone which appears white.
