I parked at the farm and the lady of the house kindly showed the track behind the barn that runs through the wood to get to the field which contains this interesting little circle. The West stone has a number of cupmarks on the side facing into the circle.

Gorgeous & very well looked after stone circle on Thorax Farm in a fabulous setting with amazing views of the area around. Set high up on a hill in Aberdeenshire, fenced off from livestock. The circle has a lovely friendly energy about it, cup & ring marks on one of the stones at the back. As previously mentioned a tree grows in the centre.
There is a holiday cottage available on this farm too if you want to stay close by. Would be an amazing site for a celebration. The farm owners are very friendly & chatty and seem to love the site too. What a fabulous thing to have on your land!

Apologies, I registered several years ago, but I have lost my user name & password.

The PSAS document I referred to in the preceding post is available at:-

http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/cfm/archway/toc.cfm?rcn=1340&vol=40

The PSAS site allows unrestricted access to all of the Proceedings of the Society from the first volume until 2004.

The article has a plan of the Thorax circle and dimensions of the individual stones, as well as some sketches.

PSAS volume 40, 1905 - 06 has a record of observations made by Fred Coles on a number of stone circles in N E Scotland, including Thorax.

This looks like an RSC I guess - although the recumbant looks a bit odd. I can only guess that the tree in the middle is some kind of romantic whimsy planted there?
