This ring cairn/circle lay under a large mound until its excavation in 1900. One of the stones is said to be marked with a faint set of concentric rings with two adjoining semi-circles.

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 12190, an extract of which reads: "Round cairn including a prehistoric carved stone 620m NW of Glassonby. The cairn is partly mutilated and consists of a largely grass covered irregularly-shaped mound of cobbles up to 0.5m high and measuring c30.5m - 33.5m in diameter. On the summit of the mound there is a circle of 30 larger stones up to 0.92m high which are arranged in an oval measuring 15.7m by 14m. One of these stones is engraved with a complex design of concentric circles, semi-ovoids, chevrons and other linear features which link it with traditions outside Cumbria. Excavation in 1900 revealed that these stones were originally covered by the mound. A robbed cist or rock cut grave was found along with an area of charcoal and bead of blue glass. Outside the the circle of stones two cremations were found, one in an urn, the other in a pit; scheduled."

Glassonby submitted by Horatio : During the excavation of the site in the 1900's a cist was discovered within the ring of stones towards its south-eastern end. The cist was formed of four red sandstone slabs laid out to form the sides of a rectangular box measuring just under a metre in length, 50 cm wide and up to 60 cm deep. What was assumed to be the cover to the cist was found nearby broken into three pieces which together ... (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Glassonby submitted by Horatio : Glassonby stone circle is a short distance north west of the village of Glassonby, and just over 1.3 miles (2km) to the north of Long Meg and her Daughters. The circle of continuous stones is on a raised mound, which extends beyond the base of the stones. Until they were excavated by W.G.Collingwood in 1900, the stones were covered by the mound. Glassonby submitted by nicoladidsbury : Glassonby Cairn Circle This is not a very good photo. The 4x4 was approaching, and I was getting nervous, but I had just spotted the magical mountain of Blencathra gleaming in the distance. So I tried my best to catch the mountain and the circle; its between the two trees to the left of the telegraph pole.

Glassonby submitted by nicoladidsbury : Glassonby Cairn Circle. Beautiful, peaceful, teaming with wildlife, remote and serene. Until a great big 4x4 came across the field and informed me the land was private and that I should have asked for permission. The ambience was gone in an instant, Katie was quite shaken. Please take my advice and try to get permission to visit. Then at least you can relax and enjoy the site to the full. (10 comments)

People wishing to visit the cairn circle at Glassonby need to request permission from the Farmer at Glassonby Lodge Farm.
I think this is his web page, which has a phone number
http://www.pick-your-own.org.uk/rowley.htm (archive link) or possibly
