TheCaptain visited on 15th Aug 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 2 Access: 5 How on Earth can I never have been to visit this before, as 43 years ago I lived only half a mile away! So, on a sunny day, after a visit to the expensive dentist, I stopped by for a look. A few large stones remain in the parking area outside a large house near the top of Druid Hill, in the leafy suburb od Stoke Bishop, north of Bristol. The stones can be seen from the road through the gateway.

This is the collapsed tomb of what was probably a chambered long barrow. It was excavated in 1913 to reveal a jumble of 5 stones (one deeply buried) including a large capstone measuring 10'4" long by 4-5'6" wide and about 2'6" thick resting on one other stone. About 1'6" below the surface of the ground are tightly-packed cobble-like stones a feature which, apparently, is found over an area considerably greater than would relate simply to the chamber.
Local knowledge in 1904 indicated that the tomb was used as centre for spring ceremonies by the local "Druids".
