Colmeallie submitted by PeteCrane5 : "A stunning location" ... "A classic, if rather mauled recumbent stone circle" .. looking back at 2023 Colmeallie in the GlenEsk is one of my favourites (Vote or comment on this photo)
Recumbent Stone Circle in Angus. The circle itself is pretty disrupted. Only five stones remain upright, though a drawing I've seen from the 1950's showed 6 upright at that time. It sits on a mound, and on investigation appears to have been two concentric circles at one time. Many stones are now fallen, and others have been utilised in nearby dykes. It's in a pretty stunning location though, and worth a look.

Access: From the A90 just north of Brechin take the B966 through Edzell, a mile or so past the town there is a road marked "Glenesk - Tarfside" heading north (left side of the road). Take this and follow the road for several miles (be warned, it's pretty narrow so watch for oncoming traffic!). As the glen opens out you'll see a sign for Colmeallie, park where convenient at the foot here, so as not to block the entrance, and walk up to the circle, which is to the left of the track. The man who used to live at the cottage here was helpful, but the new owners may not be.

'Dowsing', for those of the ley line persuasion, shows that there is a pretty strong 'focus' near the centre of the circle - this was demonstrated to me by the resident of the cottage, who had been shown how to do it by a previous visitor to the site!

Hi Fiorita Li, It's lovely to hear from you and great to know that you love the Megalithic Portal.

I think you may have misunderstood about the type of organisation we are, if you have a look at this page, it explains more about how we operate and it gives different options on how you can support us.

I visited Colmeallie this afternoon. What a lovely circle! Easy to find. I parked at the bottom of the drive and walked up and it’s up on the left side of the track near the house. No-one from the houses nearby bothered me and I get the feeling they must look after the circle as there is a neatly mown path around the circle enabling one to walk right round and it’s atill neatly kept in Mrs December. What a lovely setting and the sun was out :)

Re comment above, dated 31 Oct 2008:-

1. "...the new owners (non-local)..."

I wonder at the significance of the expression "non-local" in this context. Are we not all "non-local" to some extent or another?

2. "....signs down the road stating "No unauthorised vehicles beyond this point"....."

If it's their road, whyever not? This doesn't prevent cyclists using the road in question, as - within reason - they are authorised by the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003.

3. "......these clowns are going to have to learn......"

Inadvertently, surely, the previous poster appears to slip into "gangster" terminology and thereby discredits his cause.

4. "....the days of colonialism are over...."

Is someone suggesting the contrary?

5. "....local action is planned....."

Good grief!

In short, "Wake up!". If you want to visit the Colmeallie site on foot, the law is on your side. If you can't be bothered parking the car and walking, the law is not on your side. If you're disabled, and need to drive closer, a responsible and courteous approach to the landowner would be supported by the Code.

Exactly what more do you want?

    "non-local"
"the days of colonialism are over"
To put those two together I think he means "English"

I agree ~ it is better to be disarmingly courteous and friendly in the face of aggression (or perceived aggression) than to be confrontational. Or where does it end? I'm sure most of us would be annoyed at strangers blocking our drive with cars.Is there a hint of jealousy there in our militant friend?

From the on-line Brechin Advertiser on 4 Nov 2008:-

      ""Xenophobic" leaflet shock in Edzell

      Published Date: 04 November 2008

      By Kieran Andrews

EDZELL and its surrounding area has been the unlikely setting for a race related row, with leaflets which have been described as "xenophobic" by the leader of Angus Council being distributed and stuck to bins.

The issue was raised at Inveresk Community Council by Community Councillor Agnes Lowden, who said that she had been informed that the flyers had been distributed by a group called Campaign for Scottish Democracy around Glen Esk, with derogatory comments about Millden Estate and 'foreign land owners'.

Mrs Lowden explained to Monday night's meeting: "I have been told there are notices going up about Millden Estate which have a few derogatory comments on them, although I have not actually seen them.

"I probably agree with the bulk of it, but the end comment is quite racist against the English and totally unacceptable."

The leader of Angus Council Bob Myles had seen the flyers first hand and expressed his disgust towards them at the meeting, saying: "The leaflets are quite xenophobic and quite out of order. They are made by a group called Campaign for Scottish Democracy, but what they are doing is not very democratic and the police have been made aware of the flyers."

This news follows hot on the heels of Edzell's Union Jack flag being stolen and its flagpole vandalised just one day after it had been put back into place following a previous theft, and Inveresk chairperson Charlie Simpson told the meeting that such vandalism was disgraceful.

"There has been vandalism on Edzell Muir with the flag begin removed again," he said.

"It really is disgraceful, and I hope it is not locals who are carrying it out.""

Update re access: the new owners (non-local) who moved in a couple of years ago have now put up signs down the road stating "No unauthorised vehicles beyond this point", which I'm not sure is strictly kosher. Certainly access on foot is still covered under the Right to Roam legislation. I'm not recommending anyone breaking the law but these clowns are going to have to learn that the days of colonialism are over - and that the people of Scotland (and elsewhere) have the right to access sites which have been visited from time immemorial. Some local action is planned on this, stay tuned.

Although Burt and RCAHMS both consider this as a stone circle which had a inner cairn to me it looks much more like the remains of a robbed out chambered cairn with possible inner cists.
