Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Somerset

Priddy's holy well has perhaps a prehistoric origin being close to Roman lead mines and other prehistoric remains. It is mentioned in as a boundary mark in the 13th Century and also listed among those that define the Bishop of Wells bounds on the Mendips for the Royalty on lead belong to the Bishopric. It appears to have become Fair Lady well as noted on the map, but was noted as Fairwell before this. Horne noted some remains of walling at the back of the well. There still appears to be some stone work remaining surrounding this spoon shaped pool.
To find the site park in the car park, take the footpath. After passing the pools on the left you will come across a cross roads and here there is a white sign, Turn right and the spring is immediately beneath the trees.

Before Priddy had mains water supply the well was fed by leats, pipes & an aquaduct to the eastern side of Priddy for their water supply. Now it can be followed using the public footpath which runs alongside the leat to the clubhouse called The Belfry ,passing under the building to remerge in private property where it supplies water to a pond. The surplus sinks into a cave known as Rose Cottage Cave.
