Hillfort in Cumbria A slight univallate Iron Age Hillfort situated at 347m, occupies a commanding position from the Scarside Plantation on Knipe Scar. The remains of the fort comprise an oval-shaped internal enclosure measuring approximately 50m by 39m which is enclosed by a distinct rampart of heaped limestone rubble up to 3m wide and 1.5m high. A dry ditch up to 4m wide and 1.5m deep flanks the forts south and south-eastern sides. There is an entranceway at the centre of the eastern side. The western flank of the fort has no ditch as the limestone escarpment falls away steeply in defence.

To the west the fort commands panoramic views towards Haweswater and the neighbouring hillfort there at Castle Crag. Today the fort is obscured in saplings and conifers but would have been prominent in past times.
