Wookey Hole Caves
Wookey Hole Caves submitted by JimChampion : Fairly standard picture from one of the first caverns (The so-called Witch's Kitchen) at Wookey Hole caves. The water is the River Axe, which soon after this point emerges into the open. Bear in mind that the water level in the caves was raised by the construction of Wookey Hole mill in the 17th century (and even further back with the mill recorded in the Domesday Book). The caves were used by pal... (Vote or comment on this photo)

There is an entrance fee. See website for details.

Wookey Hole Caves is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 197048, an extract of which reads: "Wookey Hole Cave represents the upper course of the River Axe, and has been extensively developed in the 19th and 20th centuries as a show cave. Originally, the cave comprised a small entrance way and a tunnel circa 85 metres in length, which led to four chambers. Three of these are partly occupied by the River Axe. The fourth is submerged, but was examined in the 1970s. The cave has been excavated on a number of occasions".

The Journal of Antiquities also features an entry for Wookey Hole Caves, Mendip Hills, Somerset, which includes photograph, an illustration of the cave entrance, background information, details of archaeological finds and a list of reference sources for more information.

Note: Finds from the site can be seen in the Wookey Hole Caves Museum (see nearby sites below).

Wookey Hole Caves Museum submitted by JimChampion : I encountered this palaeolithic hunter-gatherer in the "Dinosaur Valley" at Wookey Hole. Hopefully it doesn't reinforce the idea that 'cavemen' co-existed with dinosaurs. His beard is looking a little green. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

RIP Gerry Cottle, owner of Wookey Hole Caves since 2003 by Andy B on Wednesday, 27 January 2021
(User Info | Send a Message)
The circus showman Gerry Cottle has died of Covid-19 at the age of 75. His agent, Mark Borkowski, announced that Cottle had been in hospital in Bath after contracting the virus.

A dynamic champion of circus with a lifelong passion for entertaining, Cottle toured his circus spectaculars around the UK and internationally for more than three decades before taking over Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset in 2003. There, he developed a host of popular visitor attractions alongside the limestone caves. The complex has a clown museum, a fairy garden, circus shows and a circus school and three resident witches. He recently staged a £1m magic show starring his daughter and granddaughter at the caves.

A bit on the pricey side, but very interesting nonetheless, and worth the while, I think. Probably more fascinating than all of the caverns the guides take you into are all of the caverns they DON'T take you into, but describe instead. If I'm not mistaken, Wookey Hole is a "work in progress" in that it is still being explored. The adjoining museum is good in helping to understand the caves' place in history.
