cosmic visited on 24th Dec 2018 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Newly recognised site. Almost seems to be a miniature with none of the stones longer than four feet (estimate - didn't actually measure). Recumbent type with one flanker standing and other fallen. Historic Environment Scotland have given it their seal of approval.

A recently built stone circle in the recumbent style, near Holmhead farm in the parish of Leochel-Cushnie in Aberdeenshire.

Originally reported in December 2018 as a new discovery: "Despite being a complete stone circle that has obviously been known and respected by those who have farmed the area over the years, it has been unknown to archaeologists until now. The site was reported to Aberdeenshire Council’s Archaeology Service by Fiona Bain, whose family have farmed in the area for generations."

Please note this site is on active farmland and the landowners live very close to the monument. Unfortunately it has been reported there have been gates left open at the farm and people knocking on the door of their house. If you are visiting please do remember to respect the privacy of the landowners and use common sense when accessing active farmland.

"Previous farmer admits to building the 'newly discovered' recumbent stone circle"
It is my understanding that the builder of the circle came forward to correct a misunderstanding. This is not an admission, which implies fault, it is a statement. I don't see any need to blame them for someone else's mistake.

It would be interesting if the stones used for this 'replica', were the correct age.

I would think they must be of the "correct" age.
The granite underlying this landscape is thought to have formed about 400 million years ago; any rocks lying around today would also have been available to the circle builders of the Bronze Age.

possibly more to this story than the superficial. 'average' stone numbers and ring size are dubious points of reference.

Just read an article today (21st January 2019) that this circle is a fake, and only 20 years old. Just so everyone knows!

Yes Stonehenge-like my arse. Interesting what Adam did say:

Adam Welfare from Historic Environment Scotland (Survey and Recording) explained how the monument in the parish of Leochel-Cushnie was different from other examples found. He said: 'In numbering ten stones it fits the average, but its diameter is about three metres smaller than any known hitherto and it is unusual in that all the stones are proportionately small.

So Adam was onto something that it didn't seem right, but must have got caught up in all the excitement. As for stone circles - clearly they don't make 'em like they used to! At least it can stay as it's on the farmer's own land and the council up here appreciate stone circles, unlike: https://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=45968

Re: Holmhead stone circle by Anonymous on Thursday, 10 January 2019
Please note this site is on active farmland and the landowners live very close to the monument - hence the vagueness of the location given in the original press release. It is clearly a wonderful and exciting new monument and worthwhile seeing. Unfortunately it has been reported there have been gates left open at the farm and people knocking on the door of their house. If you are visiting please do remember to respect the privacy of the landowners and use common sense when accessing active farmland.

The Canmore Database link above points to another site on Holmhead Farm, not this circle which is perhaps not yet listed.

Curses, foiled again!! While I was busy checking maps, this page was updated to correct the name and map reference, rendering all my posting redundant! Please ignore everything I said.

Crikey, you got in quick Golux. I had put the accurate name and grid ref on the page within 10 minutes of uploading the sitepage to begin with using an approximate position! The circle can be seen in the Bing aerial views, use the blue aeroplane icons at the top of the page.

Further to above, after checking Aberdeenshire Council's site map (which I should have done before posting) I think I've found it at NJ 51853 08498 (ish). I think I'll try a site visit to confirm, if no-one else has seen it yet.

Re: Holmhead stone circle by Anonymous on Wednesday, 19 December 2018
The map reference NJ521106 is just the centre of Leochel-Cushnie, not the location of the circle, which I presume is on Holmhead Farm about 2.5km south of this point (or perhaps its neighbour Oldtown Farm which I believe may belong to the owners of the circle, the Bain family).
Does anyone know the full map reference for the circle?
I suppose this page will be re-named when the exact location is revealed.
