Stone Circle On Knipe Moor. If it was not marked on the map not many would be able to pick it out on the limestone pavement.

Very difficult to find and the circle is anything but overwhelming. Still its in a good place with terrific views and some good limestone paving.

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 11819, an extract of which reads: "The monument consists of a ring bank of limestone boulders and rubble up to 2.5m wide and 0.9m high that encloses an oval internal area measuring c15m by 11m. On my second visit to Knipe Scar I FINALLY located the stone circle… albeit after another hour's fruitless searching. It's like looking for a stone circle on a limestone pavement. Oh, hang on, that's what I was trying to do!

Anyway, the best way to find the circle is to take the mowed path up the fellside to the ridge, where it arrives on the plateau via a nick in the escarpment. Head due east from here, a little to the north of the continuation of the fell path. Climb the low ridge at the edge of the limestone pavement and continue in the same direction. Watch out for adders if the bracken is tall.

Not far from the boundary wall at the edg eof the plantation, look out for a single wooden post. X marks the spot, as they say. Once you find it, everything falls into place and it's almost obvious!

Hi - don't suppose anyone has heard of a "Knipe How" or similar place. My Parnaby ancestor was born there and it is likely to be somewhere in North Yorks, Teesside, Cumbria area. Any help appreciated as it does not seem to exist anymore, with no internet references!

cheers

Carl

How (Howe) is a common place name in Edenside. It means a hillock. On the 1st and 2nd OS series county maps there are several place names 'how' just NW of Bampton and west of Knipe Scar. Google 'OS historic maps' for entry. However, no 'Knipe How' is shown. Local knowledge is needed to find some locations, or search for 18th C and earlier maps.

I'm a karst geomorphologist from Lancaster University. I spent the day on Knipe Scar and I saw nothing that wasn't typical of the Knipe Scar Asbian limestones. Circular features are also found on Great Asby Scar pavements but they have nothing whatsoever to do with ancient peoples.

Who is the original souce for these supposed settlements.

The Knipe Scar site mentioned here is listed in Dr Aubrey Burl's "The stone circles of Britain, Ireland and Brittany" (2000).

The gazetteer entry says that the circle is of uncertain status and perhaps misidentified but an excavation was undertaken in 1880. Two reports appear in print - both in the Transactions of the Cumberland and Westmoreland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society - volumes 6 (p178?) and 7 (1907 p211-214).

I managed to find the stone circle(?) up here in June 2004.
And I while I don't doubt circular features are found within the pavements.....I have to say that the circles embankment of broken off pieces of pavement, and the small gritstone boulders set within it are undoubtedly man-made.
To add to the references given by Vicky in her reply, the SMR notes the circle, but as being that of a Ring Cairn.
If you're ever up that way again look for a wooden post, it used to hold an info board. Standing within the circle it's the only thing that gives you any clues in finding the place.

    nice one
    stu.
