Ancient Village or Settlement in Lancashire

Askew Heights univallate prehistoric defended enclosure is located on a small promontory on the western edge of a spur of high land with steep slopes to the west and north. The enclosure has internal measurements of approx. 77m north-south by 70m east-west and is defended by an external shallow ditch c.11m wide. There are two entrances into the enclosure; one on the north side, the other on the south side. On the south west side, and commencing adjacent to the southern entrance, there is a distinct counterscarp bank approximately 5m wide which becomes steeper on the western side forming a hollow way up to 14m wide, this trackway deepens as it moves clockwise from the south west of the site and then cuts tangentially away from the enclosure towards Lythe Brow Wood. The site is bisected by a stone wall running north - south which delimits the boundary between Heights Farm and Askew Hill Farm, with most of the enclosure lying on the Askew Hill side, the surrounding ditch however is clearly defined around the whole of the enclosure. The two entrances are easily observed close to the wall on the Askew Hill Farm side of the wall.

The site is easily reached from the private road to Heights Farm from Littledale Road, it is probably best to ask permission from the farmer before visiting as there is no public footpath, we encountered a friendly gamekeeper en route who gave us good directions, and seemed concerned that this unassuming but very enjoyable site would survive unmolested in its beautiful location.

Edward Askew the Elder of Corney Hill in Quernmore was my 5 x great grandfather. His daughter Elizabeth Askew married James Bibby and they were my 4 x great grandparents.

Anne Burrows (nee Bibby).

My family owned Askew Farm at one time. Is it strill there. My " gt grand father Wlliam Askew I have a photograph of him out side of the farm house. They all so owned a large house called Williams Land. in Skirton.
Peggy Askew left this place to her son Edward. My grand mother was Annie Askew Hall. If you do have any information on this family i would be most greatfull. I did visit these places as a young child with my uncle
Warwick Hall. Thank you Alvina Shore

    Hi,

Askew Hill Farm still exists is now split into 3 properties. We moved into the Barn conversion on the West in 2018. The Hughes family owned it for at least the latter half of the 20th century and still own the Eastern part and land,

    Kind regards,

    James Fisher
