Commemorative Stone and Long Cist in East Lothian

A standing stone at this location is featured on the Ancient Stones: A Guide to Standing Stones and Stone Circles in the South of Scotland - see their entry for Standing Stone, Eldbotle Wood, Dirleton, which includes a description, directions for finding the stone with nearby parking, and fieldnotes.

This stone is not recorded on Canmore, although the building shown in the Ancient Stones' photograph can be found on Canmore ID 320086, Weaklaw Rocks, Fidra Battery, which is/was a searchlight emplacement for the Firth of Forth in WWII.

The Ancient Stones says: "The stone is located on obviously private land with the area being surrounded by a high fence. I had been at the same location some years previously but cannot recall the stone at that time. Whether the stone is a recent modern erection or an genuine antiquity is not clear. Note: A later visit revealed the stone to be a grave marker of commemorative stone."

Canmore does feature an early medieval long cist at NT 5020 8588, 70m NE of the stone - see their entry for Canmore ID 56648, Marine Villa, Eldbottle, which notes: "Long cists were found here during WW2 but no record was made of them. A further discovery was made by workmen in 1990 and a skeleton taken to the Royal Museum of Scotland."
