Scapa
Scapa submitted by howar : Seen from the road to Orphir. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Barrow Cemetery in Orkney

Correct location for one of the barrow groups tentatively placed under HY41SW 21. Petrie "examined" a group of fourteen barrows, from one of which came a stone pestle/crusher. I think these could be the 'new' find seen by a visiting archaeologist speaker a couple of years back. They would seem to be seperate from another barrow in this vicinity seen by him ("near the shore of the Bay of Scapa") whose primary internment was a cist large enough to contain a sitting skeleton. Coming from Kirkwall this is the fourth field on the east side of the B9148, below the western edge of the Well Park field and occupying the whole of this conspicuous field. From the road below it is very much a jumble of gentle rises, dips and hollows and would seem to end at the steep-sided burn. In appropriate lighting (as with the double ditch/bank of the Hillhead enclosure nearby) it is all so clear from the Orphir road, individual mounds picked out by the 'shadows' of cropmarks.
Now RCAHMS NMRS record no. HY40NW 33.
