Souterrain (Fogou, Earth House) in Aberdeenshire
Canmore site 33980
In 1872 an earth-house was discovered during ploughing about 90m from the moat of Gardiebane. It was excavated, revealing an elongated Y-shaped plan, 6.4m long. The walls supporting the roof of slabs were formed by a single course of stones set on edge. The maximum width was 90cm and maximum height 75cm. A stone ball, 75mm diameter, and a quantity of cinders and charred wood were found.
The entrance to the earth-house was within an enclosure about 18m in diameter, around the circumference of which was a ring of stones placed at intervals. The floor of the enclosure consisted of a pavement which was continous with the pavement of the earth-house. At many points there were traces of fire and charcoal. Touching this circle was another unpaved enclosure, possibly a cattle-pen.
In 1968 there was no trace of this earth-house and no local knowledge of its site, but fortunately there is a good drawing from its original discovery.
