Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lancashire
Pastscape Monument No. 41448 records an entry from 1909 which reads: "The well outside the churchyard gate at HEYSHAM had, within living recollection, an arched head full of long slender hart's tongued ferns, hanging down to the water, but the walling in the bank above gave way and fell in, and the carved stones have disappeared." This is followed by an (undated?) entry saying: "The legend that the well outside the churchyard gate was a holy well is without foundation. At present it is used as a drain from my greenhouse."
Another entry from 1953 reads: "The existing well outside the churchyard gate
although disused, is modern. It is circular in shape and constructed of stone, and is set in the wall of the rectory garden. There are two steps leading up to it from street level. Although no definite evidence was discovered it would appear that this well replaced that (mentioned above)."
The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this well - see their entry for St. Patrick’s Well, Heysham, Lancashire, which they tell us should not be confused with another St. Patrick's Well as few miles north, adding that the location of the well is "Just before going up the path to the church, set back at the roadside, you’ll see an old pump in an arch in the walling. That’s St. Patrick’s Well!"
TNA include a recent photograph of the well, together with descriptions of this and a second well (Sainty Well on private property and covered over) from the Morecombe times in 1962 and local folklore.
TNA adds there is: "An old plaque on the site of this ancient well tells: 'this is one of two holy wells in Heysham village (the other, Sainty Well) ... whose dedications are long since lost. Latterly the water from this well was used for utilitarian gardening purposes within the confines of the old rectory. Previously the well had fallen into disuse, suffered from surface contamination and became rubble-filled when the bank above gave way in the mid-1800s. In the early 1900s, the well-head was again rebuilt and the well itself was cleaned and made safe by capping with concrete. Recently (May 2002) the well-head has been refurbished and water artificially introduced, thus turning a derelict area into a feature of the village'."
