Cairnfield in Cumbria

A large cairnfield is identified on the northeastern slopes of Carrock Fell south of Carrock Beck and north of Mosedale.

Two prominent but eroded/partly excavated Round Cairns of probable Bronze Age origin are found alongside and east of the mainroad at NY3510534772 and NY3512334821. Both are grassed over mounds of cobbles around 9-11m diameter and 0.7m high.

A southernmost cairn was located at NY35105 34772
A northernmost cairn was located at NY35123 34821

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 10486.

Pastscape also includes an entry for Monument No.10489, which describes an area centre just to the north of these cairns: "A group of stone heaps, some of which represent Bronze Age round cairns and others likely to represent clearance cairns or the remains of mining activity. Some were wrongly identified in the past as hut circles", which may further help to interpret this site.
