Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by TimPrevett : From the left Breiddin hill (also spellt Breidden) with New Pieces, centre and Moel y Golfa, right. Viewed from the south. The hillfort on Breiddin hill made national news in July 2000 when the culmination of a decade of diligent deforestation showed the remains of this settlement, hidden for over 1500 years. At well over 1000 feet above central eastern Powys (formerly Montgomeryshire), not ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by VirtHist : This view of Breidden is taken from another hillfort: Nesscliffe in Shropshire. A decade of clearance work was completed in 2000, which discovered it came into existance around 800 BC and had stone ramparts 20 feet high. This is another one of the hillforts thought to have been used by Caractacus (Caradoc) in his ill fated fight against the Romans. It has also been associated with the his... Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : So where did they find:- flint, stone axes, pottery (Neolithic to RomanoBritish), bronzes, iron objects, lead objects, querns, spindle whorls, loomweights, beads, coins (Roman), wooden artefacts? Oh, about 30 meters out from the top of the quarry face - that place hanging in the air. See the rescue excavation report. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : Looking down from Rodney's Pillar, a footpath cuts through the first line of ramparts - the dent in the stone rampart is from more modern access.

Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : The left of the photo shows one of the important flatter areas, possibly even the site of the large buckbean pond which had many exciting finds when excavated. To the right of the photo is the fence protecting you from the sheer, massive drop of the quarry face.....

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : Oh no! A quarry has eaten the best bits of my hillfort!

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : Looking south from Rodney's Pillar - the most usable and important part of the hillfort are the flatter terraced areas just out of sight. That's where the excavations were done.

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : Looking back down what could be the entrance - piles of stones either side.

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : Walking up and near the top, I think I've just been through the long entrance. The report says "a funnelled passage over 70 meters long...."

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : Northern end of the Hillfort as seen from Rodney's Pillar. There are no ramparts needed here as the drop off is so steep.

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : The top of the hillfort is a popular walking destination with the locals and is well signposted, but don't turn up on a Tuesday or Saturday between 1st October to the 1st February. (1 comment)

Breiddin Hillfort
Breiddin Hillfort submitted by w650marion : Rodney's Pillar is on the highest point of the hillfort and is a popular walking destination. This photo was taken in 2012 before I understood the importance of The Breidden and the significant archaeological finds of the rescue excavations.

This hillfort is very high and very big and a most enjoyable walk, but half of it is missing! So much of the top is missing that orientation can be difficult. The hillfort has been excavated – rescue excavations – but the sites of these excavations cannot be found due to the quarrying eating away the land. The removal of trees in 2000 has kept the top clear so people can enjoy the views, but the ramparts and terraces are still covered with forestry and take some searching out.

Fortunately there are documents available on line if you want a good read, with the full layout of the original hillfort, the bronze age pottery and metalwork finds, original bronze age ramparts, followed by the iron age buildings and an important collection of wooden artefacts, the majority of them dating to about 300 BC, preserved due to marshy water in the now drained buckbean pond which was sited in the centre of the iron age layout.
