Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by mattimpey : The remains of the small Iron Age Fort on Brean Down a Site in Somerset. With beautiful views of Weston-Super-Mare, on a clear day. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Brean Down is a promontory that marks the end of the Mendip hills. The top is about 100m above the sea and over looks Brean to the south and Weston-Super-Mare to the north. There is evidence of ancient field systems and barrows and a small iron Age Hill Fort on it.

The whole site is owned by the National Trust.

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by AngieLake : I'm pretty sure from looking at a map (not the site info board at the bottom of the steps) that this is the site of the other barrow or cairn on Brean Down. Views towards Welsh coast and with a small island just visible at the end of the headland.

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by camperman : Brean Down Camp much disturbed from WW2 activities. This concrete directional arrow located near the camp was used by trainee bomber pilots during the war.

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by camperman : Brean Down Iron Age camp viewed from the south. All that remains is an L shaped bank, site much destroyed by quarrying, 20th century military buildings and a road through the site. (1 comment)

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by AngieLake : The actual headland looks rather like a huge sleeping dragon. I wonder if the ancient people saw that aspect of it? (1 comment)

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by AngieLake : This was the Brean Down information panel at the lower end of the steps. Sorry if it isn't crystal clear but if you enlarge it a bit on screen you can decipher the words. (It does prove that the small hillfort IS in that position... but it doesn't mention the barrows.)

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by AngieLake : The steps up the side of the cliff are challenging, but the rewards immense.. as you crest the ridge and see the stunning views all around you. The Iron Age hillfort is to the right at the top, and the temple site to the left, on the higher ground. An easy path zig-zags down to the right of this view... we used that to return to the car park. (Charging £3.50 for the day when we visited.. no ho...

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by AngieLake : The area near a mound [this round barrow] is the site of a Romano-Celtic temple. In a 1957 excavation report on www.ubss.org website's pdf file, we read: "The actual summit of the hill is roughly triangular. The remains of the temple are at its broad eastern end, with a Bronze Age round barrow, or burial mound, T343, immediately to the south." (1 comment)

Brean Down
Brean Down submitted by AngieLake : Looking back towards the area of the small Iron Age hillfort from the higher central area on Brean Down. The headland would once have been a large island. This view is inland towards Uphill, once a busy Roman port.
