Long Barrow in Cumbria

For more information see Pastscape Monument No. 37819, an extract from which reads: "This long barrow is one of only 6 in Cumbria and the only known example from the Furness area. Like other long barrows in the north of England it is roughly trapezoidal and faces east. It is at the small end of the size range (20m compared with 112m at Belshiel Law, Northumberland), and relatively low-lying (82m above OD compared with the majority which are over the 200m contour). It is one of only three excavated examples in the north, along with Belshiel Law and Raiset Pike, Cumbria."

Great Urswick Long Barrow
Great Urswick Long Barrow submitted by Alphasmam : Skelmore Heads Iron Age hillfort is a very distinctive place visible from all around. The limestone pavements form a natural rampart encircling a flat almost rectangular area.A late Bronze Age hoard from the site may be contemporary with the earlier phases of building but according to Barrowclough "Prehistoric Cumbria" precise dating is unavailable. Great Urswick Long Barrow
Great Urswick Long Barrow submitted by Alphasmam : It looks as if large limestone boulders have been placed on top of the limestone pavement or have been excavated out to form a very thick defensive wall. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Great Urswick by Anonymous on Tuesday, 16 January 2007
Along lane past Gt Urswick ("Ossick") youth club, (Stonebarrow Lane?). Heading towards Stainton. On left is small stone built hut. Inside is remains of "Holy Well", topped with large circular stone with signs of ironwork. Shine a torch down the hole! Proceed from entrance of hut into nearby rough field. Are these signs of hut circles? It's been over 30 years since I visited this area so hope memory serves well!
