White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell
White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell submitted by Alphasmam : The approach to White Borrans cairn from the valley following the beck.It is a very steep slope until you actually arrive at the cairn. and in no way obviously a cairn from lower down the slope. No path just follow the stream bed. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ring Cairn in Cumbria

White Borran Cairn is quite a large pile of stones in a ring with approx 8 feet across the middle grassy space. Appears to be higher at one end on the upslope side.Thick walls with some large stones maybe earth-fast incorporated in it. Presence of white quartz like stones dotted around...decoration? We saw this on Lead Fell ,Duddon Valley. All at about 200m contour.
Approaching up the steep slope from Cockenskell following the beck(...not really a path) the cairn isn't obvious until you reach the shallow less steep upper valley
Above the cairn is the source of the stream /drinking water source. From a higher vantage point several smaller cairns can be seen dotted around below the main one and quite close together and with fewer stones covered in heather and heath grasses.
To the south on Blawith Knott there are other cairn circles and evidence of field systems. To the north in almost a straight line more cairns are located at Tarn Riggs, Bleaberry Haws and others at the upper end of Dunnerdale but seem to be at a higher contour.Suggestion of more ritual significance than settlement at this higher level.??
Siting of White Borran cairns is spectacular. The view of Dow crag , Goat Hawes and Coniston Old Man is stunning. It was no mistake that these people picked this site for this view. N.B. we have looked at other cairns in the Duddon, Dunnerdale and in the Coniston area and most seem to have a spectacular view of large mountain peaks e g Lead Fell cairns of Harter Fell and Caw ,the River Lickle cairns show a tremendous view to the north of Old Man and Crinkle Crags with Bowfell and more on a clear day. Very uplifting and a great ambiance for a mountain lover. Have photographs to send separately. Fingers crossed.I'm new to this so hope it works and the two things get together!!!

White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell
White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell submitted by Alphasmam : The view from White Borran Cairn across the valley towards the Coniston Fells was the inspiration for this textile landscape. The title "Sentinel" It seemed that one lone stone had been keeping watch over the valley through all the ages. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell
White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell submitted by Alphasmam : This lone standing stone well below the rim of the cairn field is probably natural but most stones on the fellside weren't upright. Anyway it looked like a waymarker to us ! A really good ambiance to the whole area and we saw no one all day. (Vote or comment on this photo)

White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell
White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell submitted by Alphasmam : This large stone was lying flat under the turf and has at least 3 holes in it ...probably natural .(We carefully replaced the turf and didn't move the stone.) (Vote or comment on this photo)

White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell
White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell submitted by Alphasmam : This cairn is at SD26687 88943 very near to the main larger cairn of White Borrans Cairn. There are several like this around the larger on and all seem to be under turf and heather but they can be seen when you know what to look for. (Vote or comment on this photo)

White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell
White Borran Cairn, Woodland Fell submitted by Alphasmam : This photo doesn't give the true spectacle of the view across to Dow Crag on the left, Goat Hawes and Coniston Old Man on the right. It was hazy day but the full panorama is great. (Vote or comment on this photo)
