Cwrt-y-Gollen
Cwrt-y-Gollen submitted by hamish : The Stone seemed to be enjoying the Spring sun, this face has some old graffiti on it. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This magnificent standing stone lives beside the busy A40 just inside the entrance to the Welsh Brigade army camp (as was) just to the south of Crickhowell. Over 4 metres tall, “The Growing Stone” looks most impressive, and has a pleasant grass and trees area around it.

Drs Bevins, Ixer et al point out that this stone compares well with the Altar Stone at Stonehenge. Positioned where it is on a natural routeway along the valleys (today the A40) raises the possibility that the Altar Stone was from this area, added to the collection of Preseli bluestones, which could have been taken along this route to Stonehenge around or shortly before 3000 BC.

According to Wikipedia Cwrt-y-Gollen is no longer an army training camp but is currently used by several services of the British armed forces. Most notably by the British army as a reserve centre for B Detachment (North), 203 (Welsh) Field Hospital. It is also the headquarters for the Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force (ACF).

Note: This stone has a possible connection to Stonehenge, see our page for more

Cwrt-y-Gollen submitted by TimPrevett : The strong silhouettes at the end of the day were magical; I am very bored of colour photographs at the moment (don't know why!), so had to play with the black and white setting in this light, and was satisfied with some of the results. Looking NE. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cwrt-y-Gollen submitted by AngieLake : Cwrt-y-Gollen standing stone on 11th June 2011. We pulled the car into the side of the wide drive to the gateway, and while taking film and photos I was hooted by stern-looking military men passing in a jeep! (No way was I going to trespass!)

Cwrt-y-Gollen
Cwrt-y-Gollen submitted by TimPrevett : The huge menhir has an even more huge Oak Tree as its immediate neighbour, and it's a marvel to reflect that the tree is still very much the junior of the pair, and hopefully the menhir will long 'outlive' the tree, too. The strong silhouettes at the end of the day were magical; I am very bored of colour photographs at the moment (don't know why!), so had to play with the black and white setting ... (1 comment)

This stone could be close to the source of the Stohenenge Altar Stone by Andy B on Saturday, 08 April 2023
(User Info | Send a Message)
The Altar Stone at Stonehenge is unique, no other stone at the monument on Salisbury Plain constitutes the same lithology; a greenish sandstone thought to be of Late Silurian-Devonian (‘Old Red Sandstone’) age.

The MOD signs are now gone, and just the metal uprights survive of the enclosing box, as of 27/08/06. You still have to enter through a not very obstructive gate, though much less forbidding than previously.

This magnificent standing stone lives beside the busy A40 just inside the entrance to the Welsh Brigade army camp just to the south of Crickhowell. No Entry signs and “MOD Property, Keep Out” signs are posted everywhere, so I did. However a fine view can be had from the roadside, where there is a convenient lay-by to park in just opposite.

Over 4 metres high, “The Growing Stone” looks most impressive, and although it is right beside a busy road, it has a pleasant grass and trees area around it.
