Fron Hill Camp sits on a high spur overlooking Newcastle On Clun. It is reached via a fairly short, but quite steep, climb up the footpath running past the Church. Pass through a gate and turn left up the hill. As you approach the spur the earthwork of the NE bank becomes visible. The outer ditch/bank here has been completely ploughed away.

The fort is quite small, according to Archsearch measuring 106m NW/SE by 80m.

The interior is not level, having a much higher knoll in the SE section. The bank is at its highest on the Northern corner and NW and is quite impressive. The Southern side is less obvious, but increases in height further to the East.

Access to parts of the outer ditch has clearly changed over the years with much evidence of fencing alongside the modern day fencing. At some point in the past a bench was erected on the other side of the Eastern ditch offering magnificent views towards Clun and Bury Ditches Hill Fort. This bench now sits on the other side of a modern fence which runs along much of the top of the bank in this part of the fort.

The NW ditch is very impressive, but again shows evidence of imaginative fencing over the years and is quite overgrown in places. It was not possible to reach the area of the believed entrance as it was so overgrown.

Views from this site are wonderful, even on what was a quite cloudy, grey day. Offa's Dyke is clearly visible to the NE and Bury Ditches can be picked out with a pair of binoculars. Another earthwork, noted on the OS map as a settlement is also visible to the SE.

Arch search does not suggest a date for the site, but dates finds on the site to Neolithic- Late Bronze Age. Shropshire County Council's guide to Shropshire Archeaology suggests the site as an Iron Age fortified farmstead/homestead perhaps occupied by an extended family or social group.

An intriguing and peaceful site, but a pity about the fencing.
Well worth a visit.
