Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab : Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 2or3, embedded in bank. This close-up of the stone in the bank of the track shows it to be remarkably intact and erect considering the proximity of the Forestry track - but perhaps I am being unduly cynical The height from earth to top on the outer face was approx 1.1m. RCAHMW described Stone 2 as "An erect monolith, 0.84m high by 0.64m by 0.51m, possibly destroyed ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
A pair of Standing Stones in Powys

About a mile north up the lane from Llangenny is what is marked on the OS 1:50000 map as "Standing Stone", but on my 1:25000 map as two "Standing Stones" inside a little wooded area just to the west of the lane. There was just about room to park, so I got out to investigate. This is all on a very steep hillside, and the wood was very thick and overgrown with ferns and brambles, and the wall and fence beside the road prevented any entry. Try as I might, peering through the undergrowth proved a pointless task, and I saw no standing stones here.

Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by Energyman : The obvious straight edge on the left here, is aligned 333 degrees True. This is exactly towards the summit of Pen Cerrig-calch and its two cairns, which would have formed an eye-catching shape, although I can't find any special solar alignments there. The reciprocal, 153 degrees true, might be aligned with a Major Lunar Standstill (rise) but is not convincing. (The location of the stone as g... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by Energyman : I found a reasonably easy way to access the stone, across a field, so perhaps you should ask permission first. About 300m down the road from the OS location, towards Llangenny is a gate on the right and a place to pull over. Go through and walk up the hill towards the trees where there is a cattle track at the top. Follow this to the right (NE) to the gate at the edge of the wood. Go through the... Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by NickyD : I'm sure this is the same stone! It was up a steep, wooded hill and tricky to find. A sad spot really - it looked completely forgotten about! Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab : Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 1, next to road. After all my clambering, and still amazed that I had seen 2 significant pieces of stone under these conditions, I was too tired to be surprised to spot this remnant in the position given on the RCAHMW map for Stone 1. RCAHMW reference NPRN 306253 describes Coed Ynys-faen Stone 1 as "a standing stone, 1.88m high by 1.98m by 0.53m." I suspect that th... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab : Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 2or3, above track. After I had concluded that there was nothing left to find, I saw this specimen just across the track! It may in fact be Stone 2 as described by RCAHMW, but this seemed unlikely as the track will only have reached its current depth and width during Forestry activities. It would be great to think that it had been left in situ with all the heavy traffic...

Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab : Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 2, position near track. This picture shows not only how steep the bank is, but also how much material has been displaced through construction of the track and its use by Forestry traffic.

Coed Ynys Faen
Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab : Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 2, with track above. After a very difficult clamber through the bracken and brambles on the steep hillside above the road, this stone was visible roughly in the position next to the track on the RCAHMW map for Stone 2. It was obvious that constructing the track above it had caused so much material to be displaced that it was almost completely covered. I doubt whether...

Visited today and parked further up the road by the scout camp. Managed to access the woodland bank through a clear area a little further on down the road (with wood on your right). Located stone 2 from the coordinates. Wandered further along in the woodland and discovered a very large fallen stone around 1.5 / 2 metres long - it was possible to see that it may have stood at some point due to the presence of packing stones still visible around the base and around the area from where it was possibly unearthed. Beautiful mature woodland and very ambient here.

I would like to point out that the coordinates given for Coed Ynys Faen at the top of the page are extremely accurate. They took me straight to the stone, so I would score 'accuracy' as 5, not 3. Incidentally, I discovered a reasonably easy way to reach it, which I will detail on my photograph

Sorry if I confused issues by posting some comments which mixed up the sites near Llangenny! This comment is about Coed Ynys Faen, approx mile north of Llangenny.

Back to Captain's 2004 quest: at the Easter 2007 weekend, the bracken and hillside were very dry, and I went into the woodland at a point where the fence has disappeared, so I didn't feel that I was being too intrusive... I suspect it would be far too slippery & muddy in winter, and too dense in summer/autumn.

I headed up diagnally to the right, and eventually saw what I believe to be Stone 2 just below the track. Continuing up the 'track' (at least as overgrown as the rest of the site), I had to give up when it petered out, descended again & then saw the erect stone on the left (W) side of the track.

It was impossible to resist Captain's description of his 2004 efforts to locate this stone! The position of the wording on the OS is very misleading, and had me seacrching on the same hillside as Captain.

Luckily, a local resident (house name Druid's Altar!) directed me back down the hill to the field opposite the pub carpark, where the stone is nicely visible across the field from a public footpath.

The stone is also called Druid's Altar on the RCAMHW site, their reference number NPRN 306252, and gives the location more accurately as SO230178.

(For Admin - original site spells village as Langenny: should be Llangenny)

it may well be the stone you talk of, but the map ref of the stone or stones I refer to is definately SO 237188. Check out the multimap of the site. Click on the pale green circle icon thingy above.

Is this the Great Oak standing stone SO 223185 Map 161 ?
If so it stands on farm land just off Langenny Rd. within a small copse at the bottom of a slight incline, close to the hedge. It is a magnificent stone standing about 8 ft high

I too suffered the same fate when attempting to track down these stones; thick overgrown woodland, little parking space and no noticable evidence of the stones (i have two marked on my map). I do however intend to go back and have another look as there is a track a few hundred yards passed the location that comes back pretty close to the stones. This track has the advantage that you will be 'above' the stones and hence may make locating them easier. Alternatively i will head back in the middle of winter when the bracken is not so dence.
