Standing Stone (Menhir) in Powys

BR312 - Maen Llwyd standing stone - SO 2260 2762
A fine standing stone, situated within open moorland on the leading edge of a terrace on the upper slopes of a prominent S-facing ridge of Gadair Fawr. The standing stone measures 2.15m in height, 0.95m in thickness from ENE to WSW by 0.35m in width. Several packing stones are visible around its base. A spectacular location, marred by the forestry plantation to the S.

Maen Llwyd (Powys) submitted by Who587illustrator : They’re cutting the forestry plantation away. Opens up the view into the valley Southwards nicely (with which the stone now appears orientated to). The small conical hill Twyn Du also sits in line. Once the trees have been taken off the top of that, it should make for quite a sight. Will pop back up on the 20th for Spring solstice. Took my son up the opposite ridge to this location today. The plantation has been cut down next to the stone. Will pop up again next week and get a decent photo

As it says in description above, ENE/WSW orientation. 216 x 97 x 35cm.

Top quality hill furniture, stood proud on a sloping shoulder that sticks out into the corrie from the slopes of the Grwyne Fechan valley, below Waun Fach (the highest of the Black Mountains). Five miles North of Crickhowell, South Wales.

From the outset the walk in is very atmospheric. Old land. Once off the path heading steep upwards there was a real feeling of isolation, helped by the blanket of fast moving cloud.

The highest Megalith in Southern Britain at 565m? Perhaps the most remote? An hours steady state pace from the end of the road at Hermitage Bridge.

Will be nice to see it minus the plantation obscuring the view to the South West. Judging by the sections of recent felling further downhill, the trees next to the stone could be gone in the next couple of years, giving a clear 360 view above and below. Planning to come back at night with a full moon and a bivvy bag.

The top edge supposedly mimics the scooped dip in the ridge at Pen Trumau to the West. Almost, but not enough to say that it actually does. Maybe it did 4-5000yrs ago before the weather ate away at it. Taking the scenic route back via Pen Garreg I noticed looking back that the shoulder of Gadair Fawr that Maen Llwyd itself actually sits on, looks to resemble that top edge of the stone more-so. Another thing to look at on a return visit... when they’ve chopped down those trees.

Compass worked as it should. Too windy for a dowsing reading.

Set a whole day aside for a decent visit to this stone if your travelling any distance. Medium level of fitness required, map essential.

Will most definitely be coming back to ponder on what they were thinking in raising it. Both alone (midsummer overnighter along the ridge from Crickhowell) and with the family (hermitage bridge route, nice swimming spot in the summer).

New favourite place of worship.
