Cairn in Midlothian

This is a bronze age cairn on the top of Carnethy hill, the second highest of the Pentland hills. It is a loose pile of stone without any known internal structure or kerb and is 21 metres in diameter and 2 metres high. It has been disturbed to a degree by the building of several wind shelters from its stones. It is thought that this could be a funerary cairn, although it hasn’t been excavated to confirm this.

A decorated bronze axehead was found nearby along a path leading up Carnethy hill. The axehead has herringbone patterning and can be viewed here: National Museums of Scotland record
