Henge in Moray. This henge consists of an external bank and internal ditch with one entrance causeway on the W side. The slightly oval flat area so enclosed measures 47 m by 43 m two boulders (c 1 m high) in the SSW arc of the interior may be the remains of a circle of stones.

2 miles W of Elgin boundary, turn N off A96 onto minor road. Walk E through wood for 1 mile to henge which is on S facing hill crest.

Restoration Work at Quarrywood Henge
Restoration work is underway to Quarrywood Henge near Elgin. Henges are thought to have been Neolithic ritual sites. This Scheduled Ancient Monument is about 260metres across and has a ditch round it. Over recent years, the way into the henge has been damaged by erosion and the work is to repair this.

Organised by Apprentice Craftsman Rob Jones, with help from Historic Scotland and one of Forestry Commission Scotland's archaeologists, the work was to repair erosion on the way into the henge.

Some of the erosion damage has been repaired and the area will be re-seeded with native grass species in spring. The picture shows some of the work. A new path following the western edge of the henge lets visitors see the monument without damaging it. The work is very important as it ensures that the monument is protected to be enjoyed by generations to come.

For more information on Quarry Wood, visit Forestry Commission Scotland website.

For information on the restoration work, contact Rob Jones (Robert.Jones@forestry.gsi.gov.uk).

Re: Quarry Wood Henge Elgin Moray by Anonymous on Friday, 18 November 2011
I thought this may be of interest to the Henge or Stone Row lovers out there.
On Mon 14th Nov 2011 I’ve visited the Oakwood Henge near Elgin Moray, I have been visiting the henge for more than30 years now to look at and photograph some features that have possibly been wrongly identified.
Some time ago while studying the henge I uncovered a large stone possible fallen over next to the South western standing stone ,moving west in a straight line there is a 4th very large stone in the trench of the circle with a further 5th stone on the outside bank and a 6th large stone on the outside of the bank, Using a small laser positioned on the south standing stone and standing on the furthest stone to the west, the beam went directly over all six stones almost perfectly aligned. This I believe may in fact be a stone row. There are other features that are of interest in and around the henge that are of great interest and I would be willing to show these features to anyone with an interest or has a knowledge of these monuments to hear their opinion. However the reason I am bringing this to your tension at the moment is there is currently a dig in the henge at the moment tacking in two small cross sections in the North and south banks and a small dig in the centre of the henge. 21st century pict

Hi there, your discovery sounds really exciting. Could you find out who is in charge of the dig and have a word with them and show them what you've found? Some archaeologists are much more open to the public's ideas than others, but as a first step to generating interest that's what I'd do as they are currently on-site.
Of course, we'd also love to see some photos of 'your' possible six stone row alignment and any features you think are of interest.

HI I’ve got the images just having a problem getting them to the forums required Pixel size. Just missed the archaeologists on the actual job. Any way what do they know someone found the remains of an Axe mould in the henge years ago and surprise surprise an “Axe cult “From one fragment that’s some jump. I’m surprised they never just sat on the fence as usual and said Ritual.
