Alves Stone Circle
Alves Stone Circle submitted by lenny : Look carefuly and the circle becomes clear. Is it real?? Im not so sure. Do you know of any fake Circles? (Vote or comment on this photo)
Stone Circle in Moray. I (Andy B) spent an hour clambering up and down slopes in thick woodland looking for this circle. I eventually found some large stones lower down the hill from where I had been looking. At the time there wasn't a photo of this stone circle anywhere on the web so I'm still not sure I found it.

Lenny writes: This strange stone circle lies between two hills in a heavily wooded valley about 4 miles from Elgin in Moray. Why strange? Because although it does form a circle doubt must be cast on its position and odd construction. Forming a 10m diameter circle it has 4 upright stones, one is clearly a randomly selected stone (glacial), one has been erected. The other two have been rolled into place in quite shallow foundations. (The broadness of the stones stop them from moving). What leads me to believe that this is a fake circle are three things. 1. the circle is in such an enclosed area. 2. York Tower, a local crypt built as the last resting place for a wealthy family is built less than 200m away on top of the Hill. There is a lot of Victorian construction in the area where the builders built lifts and path ways for materials to be lifted to the top of the hill. 3. an 1873 map I have shows no sign of ANY circle in the area. To find out if this is real or fake will take an archaeological dig, but if any of you visit the site let me know your feelings. It would be interesting to get a second opinion.

Note: Never before seen on the web. Following Andy B's attempt last year, Lenny thinks he's finally found it in that wood

The 'Alves Stone circle cannot be the one mentioned here, as this was created by the men working in the stone quarry above. The stones that had rolled away down the hill from under York Tower were roughly placed in a circle. It is believed that the men working above came down to this circle for their lunch break.

Most of the 'lifts and pathways' were built by the quarry workers, and one was an old railway track for carrying the stones down. Another pathway is one of General Wade's original roads. The the home guard added trenches and look outs during the last war also the remnants can be seen of the old phone lines used by the home guard.

If anyone looking for the stone circle had tried to contact the owners of the ground around York Tower, they could have learned the exact history of both the circle (man made by quarry workers) and York tower, and also the crypt (which is NOT the tower). It is quite easy to find who owns what land in local records.

We dowsed this area today and came away very confused! We found several "stone circles" with difficult to determine energies. We intend to return when we have more time - taking loads of markers etc so we can try to make sense of the place.

Having visited the site, it it quite impressive. The stones are certainly very large and heavy, largest easily 3/4 tonne. It sits so close to the path about the edge of the gardens, bordering on the wooded hillside, and this is possibly suspicious. Several large boulders can be found within the woods, poking up through the soil, and it wouldn't be that hard to roll them to form a folly, if indeed this is. I'm rather open minded about this, it's easy to jump to Victorian folly idea, but Moray as a whole does have circles, small 4 poster, and a henge nearby, not to mention menhirs, ogham stone and Proto-pictish carvings at Sculptor's Cave. I would like to say that it is genuine...?

I'VE VISITED THIS CIRCLE BEFORE.

REPUTEDLY IT'S WHERE THE WITCHES FROM MACBETH WERE MET ON THE BLASTED HEATH.

tHE CIRCLE DOES LOOK ORIGINAL, BUT, AS SAID, IT DOES LOOK TO BE IN AN UNUSUAL LOCATION, DIFFERENT FROM THE NORMAL CIRCLE LOCATIONS.

FAKE? I'D LIKE TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND...
