Hillfort in Scottish Borders
This site, just off the B712 and less than 1 km north east of the village of Drumelzier, sits on top of a commanding rocky knoll with steep drops on all sides. A medieval castle, now ruined, has been built within the boundaries of an Iron Age hill fort.
Recorded as Canmore site 49914, much of the boundaries and ramparts of the Iron Age hillfort still survive. The Canmore record tells us that the fort "measures 230 ft by 85 ft within a wall which encloses the natural summit-plateau of the ridge."
At the time of our visit, the rain was torrential with no signs of letting up. We plan to revisit during September/October 2016 to take photographs of the interior.
