Standing Stone in Powys

A further couple miles down the road from Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, we stopped to view a standing stone. We parked in a layby, next to a signpost with the following details: Llangedwyn 3, Shrewsbury 25, Llanrhaedr-Ym-Mochnant 1, Bala 18; and a further sign for "Waterfall Rhaedr 5 Miles". A quick look located the stone a short distance to the SW.

We climbed over the gate (a footpath is marked here), and headed diagonally SW across the field, to a break in the hedge. On approaching the stone, we realised how huge it was! Some 13 feet tall, and most impressive. Size may not be everything, but this was good! Single stones often may not be as memorable as groups of stones, but they are worth investigating, as this wonderful fellow was. We had to make a prompt departure, as the farmer was muck-spraying in the field, as we did not want to get sprayed! Going back to the car, we caught a whiff down-wind, and it was a most obscene smell... it was good we left when we did!

Aber Rhaeadr submitted by TimPrevett : A self portrait, for scale, with this enormous menhir with some of the open valley behind. One of my favourite standing stones. Folklore records it was draped in a studded red cloth, and was used to kill a serpent which had been terrorising the area (allegedly!). This explains some of its names - Post Coch (red post), Post y Wiber (Post of the Wyber (or Wyvern / Winged Serpent)). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Sunny100 writes: The Dragon's Post Standing Stone, Gwynedd, at SJ.136248. This solitary menhir, around 3.0m tall, stands in a field just NE of Aber Rhaedr House, and near the village of Glantanat. It is a pre-historic standing stone that has had numerous legends of dragons and huge snake-like creatures associated with it.

The best known legend recalls that the stone was used by the local people to rid themselves of a terrifying dragon that roamed the countryside. But how did they manage that? The stone must weigh several tonnes. The name Post-y-Wiber means 'Stone of the Dragon'. It has also been called 'Post Coch' - The Red Pillar, perhaps because at certain times the stone takes on a reddish look.
