A cup-marked stone with an irregular arrangement of at least 35 cupmarks of varying size and depth. Dispersed within the cupmark arrangement are a number of faint incised lines, many cutting into or connecting with cupmarks. Size approx 1.5m by 1m, it is the southern of two cup-marked stones located on open upland heath west of the summit of Mynydd Eglwysilan.

To the north of Senghenydd Dyke and north-west of the mountain road that connects Nelson with Senghenydd.

The site was identified and recorded by Martin Hutchinson in March 2019. Another stone (PRN 05909s Ffôs-yr-Haidal 2) c. 150 m to the north northwest at ST1080292444 (see below), is considered likely to have a chronological association with nearby cairn cemeteries, including Carneddi Llwydion.

Man filmed himself damaging ancient Eglwysilan monument by Andy B on Friday, 01 September 2023
(User Info | Send a Message)
A man who filmed himself damaging a monument up to 4,500 years old has been ordered to pay for its restoration. Heritage officials said Julian Baker ruined part of the artwork beyond repair and it is now "lost forever".

Baker, 52, of Abertridwr, Caerphilly, admitted deliberately exposing and damaging the Bronze Age monument believed to date back as far as 2500BC.

Baker, who lives near the site, posted video on Facebook of him damaging the artwork on Eglwysilan mountain. In the first prosecution of its kind in Wales, Baker was told to pay £4,400 compensation for disturbing the ancient cairn field and damaging the rock art. He was also given a four-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years at Newport Magistrates Court.

NEARBY: Ffos-yr-Haidal 2, Mynydd Eglwysilan, Nelson, Caerphilly
Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 05909s
NGR : ST1080292444
Site Type (preferred type first) : BRONZE AGE CUP MARKED STONE
Status : Scheduled Monument

A cup-marked stone, c. 0.90m x 0.80m, the northern of two cup-marked stones identified and recorded by Martin Hutchinson in March 2019, is located on open upland heath at the head of a southwest - northeast aligned stream valley, west of the summit of Mynydd Eglwysilan, to the north of Senghenydd Dyke and north-west of the mountain road that connects Nelson with Senghenydd. The site lies a southeast-facing slope which forms the southern side of a southwest – northeast aligned ridge which has exposed outcropping, along with possible evidence of the remains of possible stone-chambered monument(s) close-by. The site, and another stone (PRN 05908s Ffôs-yr-Haidal 1) c. 150 m to the south southeast, is considered likely to have a chronological association with nearby cairn cemeteries, including Carneddi Llwydion

The cup-marked stone or panel, considered to be part of a loose boulder (of the same geology as the surrounding bedrock), has a flat horizontal surface containing 10+ cupmarks of varying size and depth (the majority located on one half of the panel. The cupmarks are arranged in no particular pattern (Hutchinson & Nash (forthcoming), CBA Wales).
