Barry Island Cairns

Cairns on Barry Island. Only the southernmost of the five cairns really stands out and this is because of a mound of mortar was placed on top erect a flagpole.

Coflein lists these as Friar's Point cairns (NPRN refs 300876-80). All were excavated in the 19th century and little remains to be seen.

Barry Island Cairns submitted by sem : Only the southernmost (rh of the picture) of the five cairns really stands out and this is because of a mound of mortar was placed on top erect a flagpole. Originally this would have been seen from a great distance and would have been a marvellous "signpost" for Bronze Age seafarers. (Vote or comment on this photo)
